From The 100(mail)b(ox): Patrick Pleau

Hiding in our inbox this week we have Patrick Pleau, from French-speaking Montreal and formerly of Plajia (who I posted about some time ago). I liked Plajia well enough, but they didn’t grab me like Patrick Pleau’s solo work has done. Although I have no idea what he’s singing about (since I know about two French words and, now that I think about it, that may be an exaggeration), I absolutely love “Antigénie” (below). It’s singy-songy and there’s a great tuba (or trombone maybe, I’m not sure) thing going on and a sense of childhood – it all feels like a sunny day at a carnival. With balloons, there’s definitely balloons. For all I know, he’s singing about terribly sad things, but it sure sounds happy.

I admit I haven’t had a chance to listen to the whole of Patrick’s debut solo album, Hype-Moi, yet but I’m definitely intrigued by what I’ve heard. These songs clearly belong under the ‘indie pop’ category, but with a retro feel and the occasional dance influence. Hype-Moi is out now, or go to PatrickPleauSpace or his official website to learn and hear more.
